Antistat

Plastics are inherently insulative material. They do not readily dissipate the static charge. The primary role of an antistatic agent is to prevent the buildup of static electrical charge resulting from the transfer of electrons to the surface. The static electricity can be generated during processing, transportation, handling, or in final use. The excess charge build up may cause fire and explosion hazard, poor mold release, damage to electrical components, attraction of dust etc. Antistats function is to either dissipate the charge or promote the decay of static electricity. Chemical antistats can be categorized by their method of application (external and internal) and their chemistry. Most antistats are hygroscopic material and function primarily by attracting water to the surface. The ambient humidity plays a vital role in this mechanism. Several factors influence antistatic performance. The end application dictates the level of performance the substrate must provide.
